It is not uncommon in today’s society (especially in the United States) to find more than one religious persuasion within the same household. How many people do you know whose parents or children are of differing faiths? The chances are that you can name a few.
This was certainly not the case in the early days of the New Testament church and religious tolerance was almost unheard of. If you were Jewish, you were just that, Jewish. If you were not, you were not. And, consider a brand on homelessness of which we are unfamiliar. That brand is the kind in which one finds himself or herself homeless due to a religious affiliation. Can you say “no tolerance”.
It is upon this context that we find Jesus speaking in Matthew chapter 10:35-37 For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law–a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me…
Put yourself into that picture. You have to decide between following Jesus and being ostracized by your family and friends. Many people found themselves homeless for just such a decision. And, this did not catch the Lord Jesus by surprise. He knew that the decision to follow him would not go well in most households. And He call us to make that choice wholeheartedly. If we value our earthly relationships more than our relationship with Him than clearly we are not worthy of Him.
