One thing is sure about every Major League Baseball season, it is long. Nearly every year a surprise team will come out of the gate strong and the questions then come, can they continue this pace.
In that respect, this season is no different than any other. Just a little more than a week ago the Los Angeles Dodgers were muddling in last place in the National League West Division. Struggling with injuries to key players, the one thing they and everyone knew is that it is a long season.
Teams that sit atop the division early on must continue good play while those in the back of the pack continue to chase them. Such was the case in the National League West. Now healthy, the Dodgers have won 9 of their last 10 ballgames and leap-frogged three division foes in the process. They now find themselves just 1 game behind the league leading San Diego Padres in the standings.
Poised to continue their good play, they begin a home weekend interleague series with the Detroit Tigers. We will see if their stellar play over the last week and a half continues.
One thing is for sure, good solid pitching will have to be on tap. The Tigers enter the series with a nearly identical record of 24-17 and have won 7 or their last 10.
