Make or Break Series for the Dodgers

The Major League Baseball season is often times defined as the most grueling among major team sports. One of the reasons is simply the length it encompasses. From start to finish the MLB season stretches some 7 months and play drags and drags on through what many call the “dog days of summer”.
It is for this reason that not too much is made of series matchups early on and the implications of such series. The time is now upon us where games really begin to take on major significance for teams that have post season aspirations.
Two such teams square off tonight as the Dodgers visit the National League west division leading San Diego Padres. The Padres have held the lead in the division for nearly the entire season to date. As of tonight they have the best record in the National League.
It is for this reason that this 3 game series is so important to the Dodgers. If they can manage a sweep of the Padres in San Diego they will put themselves in prime position to regain first place later in the week when the teams meet again at Dodger Stadium.
On a side note to the season, the trade deadline is rapidly approaching the Saturday 7/31 date. As of yet the Dodgers have made no moves and it appears that they will be handcuffed by the turbulence within the ownership group. Owner Frank McCourt is in the midst of a nasty divorce settlement and all moves appear to be on hold.
One can only hope that there is a little wiggle room to add a significant piece to the roster puzzle.
